Board of Education Meeting – Monday, May 20 – 7:45 pm

Please join us at Monday’s Board of Education meeting as we continue our Elementary School highlights tour with Wyoming School Principal, Kristin Mueller, and Hartshorn Principal, Ken Frattini, as they share some of the innovative programs happening at their schools.

I also invite you to hear from John Kleiman from Challenge Success who will share insights on the Middle and High School survey data.  Our school district Challenge Success teams went to Boston last weekend for a follow-up workshop to our training last fall at Stanford University. Since that time, we have administered school culture and climate surveys to our Middle and High School parents and students.  Our teams are reviewing those results and using the data to inform best practices for our students and staff going forward.  Among the goals of the work is to, “Implement research-based strategies that promote student well-being and engagement with learning. ~Challenge Success~

Again, I would like to recommend that you bookmark the Challenge Success website. They offer a wealth of resources for parents, as well as educators, to support the mission of “helping children develop the necessary skills to become resilient, ethical, and motivated learners. They partner with schools, families, and communities to embrace a broad definition of success. “After all, success is measured over the course of a lifetime, not at the end of a semester.”

Officer Appreciation Day

Hartshorn School celebrated the second annual ceremony for Officer Appreciation Day today.

Hartshorn’s student “Change Agents” developed an initiative to honor Officers every year on May 17.  Change Agents are students who work together to make a visible difference in the world through Environmental Awareness, Ethics in Action, Community Service, and Random Acts of Kindness.

In their second year they continued with their mission to increase awareness of Officer Appreciation Day.  They researched school districts in New Jersey and wrote and sent letters to hundreds of Superintendents encouraging them to recognize May 17th as Officer Appreciation Day. Several other towns in NJ have already committed to celebrate Officer Appreciation Day on May 17th.

The celebration included:

  • The State Police landed their helicopter on the back field at Hartshorn School this afternoon.
  • The Millburn Honor guard presented the Flag for the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Millburn Police Chief Brian Gilfedder accepted the Officer Appreciation Day Award on behalf of the Millburn Police.
  • Trooper Shane McClafferty accepted the Officer Appreciation Day Award on behalf of the State Police.
  • Students also presented an award to our military for Officer Appreciation Day.

Congratulations to Hartshorn School Change Agents for working to create a special day to thank those who serve and protect us.

Welcome to our world little ducklings!

We shared the Wyoming Wildlife Webcam with you a few weeks ago.  If you have been watching, you know the ducklings have hatched!  Now you can see them explore their new world and watch them grow. Glenwood School also has some new arrivals … meet them at DuckCam Live.  What a wonderful example of integration of technology and learning.  Thank you to the Kindergarten teachers and Technology facilitators for giving your students such a memorable way of seeing science and nature literally come to life!
