Dear Parents and Staff,

As we come to Spring Break in our school calendar, I want to remind students, staff and parents of the importance of truly taking a break.  Whether you are on a vacation or stay-cation, be sure to find time to, as Dr. Miron’s high school sign says, “Relax, Rejuvenate and Return.”

In the school district’s continued focus on Health and Wellness, you will be hearing more about Social and Emotional Learning as a key component in our students’ growth.  Social and emotional learning (SEL) is defined as the process through which students and adults attain and apply knowledge, attitudes and skills required to understand and manage emotions, establish and achieve goals, feel and show empathy, develop and maintain positive relations and make responsible and decisions.

If the content and curriculum at each grade level are the bricks that assemble the path to our students’ journey from Kindergarten to graduation, SEL is the mortar between them.  These are the life skills our students need to have to succeed in life, and the characteristics they will have as I shake their hand at graduation and know I am sending a “Millburn citizen” into the world.

Use some of your time off this week to put down screens, make connections and enjoy friends, family and nature!

Speaking of nature…Earth Day is coming, and our Green Schools Team invites the community to help with a River Cleanup on Saturday, April 20 from 11 am to 1 pm.  Congressman Tom Malinowski will join the effort at Campbell’s Pond (in the South Mountain Reservation).

Congressman Malinowski will also be celebrating Earth Day at Washington School on Monday, April 22 with an assembly with our 5th grade students.

The annual Millburn Film Fest takes place on Friday, April 26 at 700 p.m. I’m told there are more films than ever this year, and, if you have been to this event you know you need to be prepared for laughs, tears and joy and amazement in these films produced by our students. If you haven’t attended, get your tickets now!   The Krueger-Rhodes award will be presented to Millburn Hgh School Art teacher Kathleen Harte-Gilsenan for her commitment to enhancing the education of students through art and film.
