Millburn Township Storm Recovery Update

Our emergency service personnel have been working around the clock to extricate people from dangerous situations. We have seen significant damage around town as a result of the storm. Beyond emergency calls, we have received over 300 non-emergency calls for service. These non-emergency calls include:

  • 70 different streets reporting wires down. Some streets may have multiple occurrences. This does not include low hanging wires that impede plowing.
  • 52 different streets reporting trees in the roadway or across a resident’s driveway. Some streets may have multiple occurrences. This does not include calls that came in for trees leaning on power lines or branches hanging on wires.
  • 59 motorists assisted.
  • 14 motor vehicle accidents.
  • 6 trees on structures.

Despite all of the damage we are fortunate that no one was seriously injured. Many of the non-emergency calls have been addressed. We are working with Essex County’s Office of Emergency Management and Department of Public Works to clear County roadways.

Numerous roads have been cleared and opened. Parsonage Hill Road remains a major road closed for a tree leaning across the roadway onto wires. There are also numerous secondary roads that are closed.

There are still many roads that are impassible due to downed wires and trees. The Millburn Fire Department continues to investigate reported downed and hanging wires to report to the various utilities. The Department of Public Works is continuing to plow as roads become accessible.

Trees and other obstructions may have cautionary tape to identify a downed tree or wire. Downed wires could be live, and residents should not approach anything with the cautionary tape.

Our focus will be on JCP&L restoring power back to our residents. The Township is pressing JCP&L to release details as to when specific outage tickets have been assigned to a crew. At this stage JCP&L anticipates global restoration to take place by March 14th. This is a global restoration, and is not an estimate for individual outages.

JCP&L has confirmed there are 2,708 customers without power, about 33% of the town. There are 196 separate outage projects that JCP&L will have to address to bring the town back to full restoration. JCP&L has 10 crews in or around the Township addressing hazard and tree conditions.

Both the Millburn Library and the Bauer Center will be open for warming and charging. The Millburn Library will be open today until 5:15 PM, tomorrow from 9:30 AM – 5:15 PM, and Sunday from 9:30 AM to 4:45 PM. The Bauer Center will also be open from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday.

Herbaceous waste should be cleared by a contractor or put to the curb, no larger than 3’ 4’’ in diameter.

The Township will continue cleanup efforts over the coming days and weeks. Updates will include current road closures. We appreciate everyone’s calls and patience during this difficult time. Please continue to check the website, Twitter, and Facebook for future updates.
