LAKE COMO, NJ — An 18th Avenue resident woke up early on Sunday, June 10 to quite a mess, and it wasn’t the empty bottles, cans and other debris that litter the front lawns of Lake Como homes on a typical weekend during the summer.
The homeowner not only found an unknown man sleeping inside his garage at about 6 a.m., but someone had vomited on his outdoor patio and defecated on a patio chair. There were also shoes, a cell phone and a soiled pair of shorts on the patio.
After Belmar Patrolmen Peter Speakman and Patrick McGill arrived on the scene, the man was identified as Joseph Cassano, a probationary firefighter with the New York Fire Department and son of former New York Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano.
According to the police report, Joseph Cassano, asleep in a chair in the garage in soiled underwear, appeared confused and could not remember any details leading him to this location, which is situated in walking distance of several bars frequented by summer visitors to this seashore town.
Cassano has been charged with criminal mischief and defiant trespass, and is scheduled to appear in Belmar Municipal Court on July 24. Meanwhile, the recent New York Fire Academy graduate has been suspended for 30 days without pay from the NYFD, according to department reports.
