CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ – James A. Flood, a noted maritime artist whose paintings of historical ships can be viewed throughout the world, recently provided The Patriots’ Path Council of the Boy Scouts of America with a royalty-free license to use his mural of the USS New Jersey for the t-shirts nearly 200 Scouts and adult leaders will be wearing at the 2017 National Jamboree in July.

National Jamborees are held every 4 years by the Boy Scouts of America, and most local councils, including New Jersey’s Patriots’ Path Council, create a set of commemorative patches specifically for those events, for Scouts to wear on their uniforms and to trade with each other.  The patch theme for Patriots’ Path, selected by the Scouts, honors the nation’s battleships, including the USS New Jersey. The Jamboree contingent’s t-shirt design is consistent with the battleship theme.

Mr. Flood’s painting depicts the USS New Jersey at sea in rough weather, heading for the gun line off the coast of Vietnam. At the time, the artist was serving on board as a petty officer 2nd Class in the Navigation Department. A mural of the first version of the painting exists today in the museum section on board US New Jersey in Camden, New Jersey, where the vessel is permanently berthed.

According to Patriots’ Path Council Jamboree Chairman Marty Foy, “The Council, and all of its Scouts who are scheduled to attend the Jamboree, greatly appreciate Mr. Flood’s generosity, and will be proud to display his artwork of the USS New Jersey on their backs this summer. Our t-shirts will serve as a living tribute to the men and women from New Jersey who have served, or currently serve in the US Navy and other armed services.”

More than 25,000 scouts from around the nation are expected to attend this 10-day, high-adventure extravaganza at the Summit National Scout Reserve, located on 10,600 acres in West Virginia.
