MILLBURN, NJ - The Millburn Township Environmental Commission is sharing monthly "Green Tips" to provide environmental information to the Millburn Township community. This month top tip deals with disposable utensils and their larger impact and the additional tips cover a lot of environmental hot topics.
Tip 1: It’s estimated that each piece of disposable cutlery is used for only 3 minutes before it is thrown out. By brining your own utensils, you can prevent the creation of unnecessary plastic pollution, much of which ends up in our oceans.
Tip 2: It takes 4,000 to 18,000 gallons of water to produce a single hamburger. By reducing the amount of meat your family eats, you can drastically reduce water use and green house gas emissions.
Tip 3: Give your coffee grounds a second life by using them to scrub grease off of pots and pans or by adding them to your compost for a nitrogen boost.
Tip 4: Thrown out food makes up about 13% of the US waste stream, but a much higher percentage of landfill caused methane. By composting you can reduce their impact on the climate while helping your garden blossom.
