NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence Reds Baseball Team advanced to the semi-finals of the New Jersey Amateur Baseball League Playoffs with a 5-4 win over the Jersey Stars on Sunday August 7th.
The Stars scored two runs in the first but the Reds came right back and cut the lead in half in the first. After a Billy Holden leadoff triple, Tom Pavero would single him in for his first hit on what would be a big day at the plate.
With the Stars still up 2-1 in the 4th inning the Reds erupted for four runs. Pavero tied the game at two with a solo home run to right center field. Pitcher Scott Horowitz would walk and Dave DeRosa would single. The next batter catcher Pat Rooney would add a two-run triple to make the score 4-2. Two batters later outfielder Brett Revet would add an RBI single to extend the lead.
On the mound for the Reds, Horowitz went the distance for his first win in the playoffs. He would finish with nine strikeouts in nine innings pitched.
Pavero would finish the day with three hits and Rooney with two hits.
The Reds now face the undefeated North Jersey Yellow Jackets on Sunday August 14th in New Milford at 1:30pm. The winner of that game will then advance to the finals which begin on Sunday August 21st.
