Peck School Announces Redesign for Deetjen Kindergarten

MORRISTOWN, NJ. The Peck School is undergoing an innovative redesgin to their dedicated kindergarten space over the summer of 2017.

According to Head of School Andy Delinsky, “The design takes its inspiration from a garden, and the colors and palette reflect that theme. This is very intentional, because Kindergarten at Peck is where the original seed is planted – a seed that blossoms and transforms itself throughout the kindergarten to 8th grade journey.”

The entire building, including some exterior spaces, will be thematically redesigned and ready for the incoming kindergarten class for the 2017-18 school year. The Peck School partnered with the award-winning national firm KSQ Design to develop the plans, which promote the concepts of growth and nature.

“The furniture and finishes reinforce the wonderful nurturing quality of the current Peck kindergarten with subtle color and natural materials, always with sustainability in mind. The storage and furniture is moveable to allow for flexibility, as the whole building becomes a learning tool,” said Mark McCarthy, a principal at the KSQ Design firm.

The Peck School dedicated the kindergarten building on June 12, 1993. At the request of the donors, the Ross family, the building was named in honor of longstanding former Headmaster Rudolph H. Deetjen Jr.

The building features a large central corridor surrounded by two classrooms, a great room for community gatherings and performances, and a “makerspace” for educational design challenges and creativity. The central corridor of the current building is reimagined in the new design as a gallery incorporating storage and cubbies and providing visual connection to the multipurpose room as well as a generous display of student work. The classrooms each have their own color theme with moveable furniture to allow students and teachers to customize their space and enhance the connection to windows and natural light. The makerspace is completely redesined to allow students to explore their creativity and problem solving skills and maximize storage and display. The design extends to a new garden in front and outdoor classroom to the rear.

“We are of course thrilled for what this means for the future of the Peck kindergarten program, but more importantly, we couldn’t be more excited to welcome the first kindergarten class into the new space in September, 2017,” announced Andy Delinsky.
