NEWARK, NJ – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced Monday that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau and the Critical Incident Response Team are investigating a police involved shooting that occurred Monday afternoon in Newark.
Monday at approximately 1:20 p.m. a Newark Police officer discharged his weapon during an incident in the 200 block of Muhammad Ali Blvd, near Irvine Turner Blvd.
One person sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm. No police officers were shot. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.
Attorney General guidelines require all county Prosecutor’s to respond to incidents when someone is shot by a law enforcement officer. The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time.
