MILLBURN, NJ - The Red Cross of the North Jersey Region held their seventh annual Run for the Red 5k in Millburn on Sunday morning, Dec. 2, to raise money for the Red Cross and support programs locally and regionally.

The race started at 10 a.m. at the Millburn Public Library and continued on a beautiful, tree-lined course through the South Mountain Reservation. Youngsters also competed in the Children's Fun Run prior to the 5K.

The chairs of the event were Barry and Patricia O’Brien and it was coordinated with the help of the Millburn Township Committee. It was sponsored by the Sneaker Factory as well as by the C.R. Bard Foundation, Inc., Investors Bank, AAA, Sports Authority, Ernst & Young LLP, Lane McVicker, Office Furniture Partnership, Theatre Arts PT, Millburn Laser Center, Powerflow Yoga, Professional Audio Consultants, The Racquets Club of Short Hills, Toll Brothers and Walter Bauman Jewelers.

Kim Goetz, the director of special events for the Red Cross of North Jersey, was excited to be at her first Run for the Red 5k. She said besides the foggy weather and chilly temperatures, it was a great turnout, with over 200 participants this year running in the race.

“It’s a great fundraiser and raises awareness for us,” Goetz said.

John Hogan of Washington, who has won the race twice in the past, finished second. He exercises often and participates in several marathons throughout the year, as well.

“I was trying to win, but obviously I didn’t,” Hogan said.

Short Hills resident Nicole Cavender tries to run in the race every year and said she always enjoys it. She was a little out of breath, but finished in the top 10.

“I thought it was really good,” she said. “I had a good time.”

Making the trek from Stockholm in Sussex County was Patricia Butcher, who at the age of 50 is in extremely good shape. She finished third and also ran last year, as well. Butcher is also a member of the North Jersey Masters Club in Ridgewood, so she is constantly running in races throughout the state.

“I really liked the race and it’s for a great cause,” she said. “I ran pretty fast considering I raced yesterday.”
