SUMMIT, NJ - A 27-year-old Scotch Plains woman gave birth in a vehicle on the shoulder of Highway 78 East, at mile marker 45.8 near Summit, April 6 at 8:26 a.m.

Olivia Cummings had gone into labor earlier in the morning, and was being driven to the hospital by her friend, Lashanie Watson, when it became apparent that Cummings was about to give birth. Watson pulled off the highway and called 9-1-1.

Summit Police Officer Keith Kwiatek and New Jersey State Trooper Chris Gesualdo arrived on the scene just in time to help deliver a 6-pound, 14-ounce baby girl who has since been named Ania.

Summit Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and transported Ania and her mother to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
