Seton Hall Surges Past Eastern Washington With Strong Second Half

NEWARK, NJ – The Seton Hall men’s basketball team bounced back strong on Sunday following last week’s loss to Saint Peter’s. With the return of seniors Fuquan Edwin and Patrik Auda, the Pirates surged past Eastern Washington, 92-70, at the Prudential Center.

Auda and Edwin provided a spark in all facets of the game, combining for 20 points in the win. Edwin contributed a career-high eight steals, tying the single-game school record, en route to being named to the Big East Weekly Honor Roll.

“Having Patrik go in the game and seeing Fuquan go in there, gave the guys a little bit more sense that we won’t have to keep inventing the wheel like we did last year,” head coach Kevin Willard said. “Its good that our injuries are going away with 2013.”

The Pirates led by just two points at the half, after getting outrebounded, 20-10, in the opening 20 minutes.

However, after Willard “refocused” his team during the break, the Hall came out firing in the second half.

As a team, Seton Hall shot 61 percent from the floor, converting 17 shots in the second half, outscoring Eastern Washington by 20 points in the process.

Senior forward Eugene Teague scored 19 of his team-high 20 points in second half, shooting 5-for-6 throughout the game with six made free-throws. Willard said his big man was the difference between the two halves.

“We talked a lot about getting the ball inside to Eugene,” Willard said. “I was happy more than anything that Eugene got the basketball. He had only six shots, but it got in there. He’s such a presence. We spent all week working on that.”

Freshman Jaren Sina played 35 minutes in the game, replacing injured guard Sterling Gibbs in the lineup. The rookie point guard had 14 points and a career-high eight assists.

The Pirates are back in action on Friday when they host Lafayette at the historic Walsh Gymnasium on Seton Hall’s South Orange campus.
