Short Hills Family to be Honored for Charity Work

SHORT HILLS, N.J. — The Berns family of Short Hills make giving back a family affair. Beth and Steven Berns along with their three sons Matthew, Billy, and Adam are set to receive the 2018 Champions of the People award for their work with FAMILYConnections. The award will be present the A Taste of NJ's Best, an Essex County tasting event and fundraiser on May 2.

The Berns family are avid supporters of FAMILYConnections’ mission to build strong families and communities. Beth served on the FAMILYConnections’ Board of Trustees for ten years. The rest of the family have been active and eager volunteers during her tenure. 

“The Champion of the People Award is given each year to people who have a special commitment to helping youth and families,” says Jacques Hryshko, FAMILYConnections’ Executive Director. “The Berns family has devoted extensive time and effort to charitable endeavors that support this purpose including FAMILYConnections. They are dedicated to giving back and making a real difference in the community. We are thrilled to recognize their special commitment.”

Beth, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, provides supportive psychotherapy for teens, adults, couples, and families. She specializes in the evaluation and treatment of anxiety disorders and substance abuse related disorders.

Steven is the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Shutterstock Inc., a leading global provider of high quality licensed content. Steven has held executive roles at Tribune Media, Revlon, Tradeweb, MDC Partners, and Interpublic Group.

Matthew, a graduate of Emory College, is now working as a screenwriter in California.   Billy is a junior at Cornell studying Industrial and Labor Relations. Adam is a junior at Newark Academy. 

Bernice Manshel, of West Orange and the former Director of DYFS and FAMILYConnections, is receiving the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award the same evening.
