Short Hills Girl Found Dead in New York

Rowen Altenburger of Short Hills

NEW YORK, NY - Rowen Altenburger, 18, a New York University student from Short Hills, was found dead at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bryant Park Hotel in Manahattan, according to a report in the New York Post.

The story’s sources said that Altenburger’s mother had called the hotel to say her daughter was supposed to have checked out Monday, but that she had not heard from her.

Suicide is suspected, but the investigation is ongoing and it is premature to speculate at this time.

“The struggle is real. As a student at New York University pursuing a degree in Creative Management and Art Direction through Gallatin it can be easy to lose yourself. Not to mention lots of time,” a posting on Altenburger’s website, www.rowenbrea.com, said.

A police car arrived at the hotel and detectives escorted a woman, a young woman and a man from the hotel into the car at about 2:40 p.m.

At Millburn High School, where many students knew the recently graduated Altenburger (who's brother is currently a sophomore), Principal Dr. William Miron wrote to faculty and parents, saying, "Our counselors, case managers, nurse and other staff are all available for support. Any student or staff that wishes to be excused from any activity need only ask. We will conduct classes and activities as scheduled but no student or teacher should hesitate asking to be excused. During first period I will address the school. These are never easy times. My thoughts are with the family."
