Since 2008 the Millburn-Short Hills CSA (community supported agriculture) has capped membership at approximately 50 families due to space restrictions at the pick-up location. Now, for the first time in five years, the CSA has opened membership to as many members as want to participate thanks to a new pick-up location at the Wells Fargo parking lot in Millburn at the corner of Essex and Spring Streets behind Bhakti Barn Yoga. The Millburn-Short Hills CSA is run by township resident Melissa Goldberg.
A CSA is a way for consumers to buy local, organic, seasonal food directly from a farmer committed to growing in a sustainable manner. Participating in the CSA entitles members to a “share” each week throughout the farming season. Members can purchase vegetable and fruit shares and add on egg and pasta shares - each is priced differently. New this year, the CSA is offering organic olive oil shares.
The deadline for a membership is April 1, 2012; share prices are $600 for vegetable, $276 for fruit, $92 for a dozen eggs per week and $97.75 for fresh homemade pasta each week. 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil is $15 per 375 ml claret bottle.
“Food is important, and knowing where your food comes from has become vital to healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle,” Goldberg said. “The Millburn-Short Hills CSA has a long-term focus and commitment to bringing the best locally grown, sustainable, fruits and vegetables to the families who have become members.”
Goldberg continued “Members learn to eat seasonally, and enjoy foods that arrive according to nature’s timetable. Everything the CSA provides is field-fresh, flavorful and nutritious because produce is harvested weekly and travel time and distance from farm to fork is kept to a minimum. And now thanks to Wells Fargo-Millburn, more of the community can benefit from the CSA.”
Every week, from mid-June through late-November, members will receive fresh organic vegetables grown at Starbrite Farms in Andover, NJ and/or organic fruit from Breezy Hill Orchard in Staatsburg, New York. Members can add fresh free range, anti-biotic and hormone free eggs and fresh pasta shares from Knoll Krest Farm, Clinton Corners, NY. 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Tapadero Ranch, small grove of hand-cultivated organically grown trees in Central Coast California, will be deliver on three separate days throughout the summer. (Note: Olive Oil can be purchase even if not participating in vegetable and/or fruit shares.)
