MILLBURN, NJ - A team of six South Mountain Elementary fourth-graders qualified to compete in the Destination Imagination Global Finals on the heels of their NJ State Tournament win.
The team took first place in Scientific Challenge at the state level, beating out 15 other elementary teams. The 'Top Secret' challenge asked teams to create two original code ciphers and integrate them into a play about a secret mission that they wrote, produced and acted in all on their own. Their skit was called The Leading Women's Society, where real women from history time travel together to defeat villains using their wits and their code-breaking skills!
The global finals take place in Knoxville, Tennessee on May 24th. The girls will be hosting a variety of fundraising events around Millburn to raise the competition entry fee. The girls have also set up a GoFundMe page to aid their fundraising efforts that can be found here.
The Destination Imagination mission is to develop opportunities that inspire the global community of learners to utilize diverse approaches in applying 21st-century skills and creativity.
The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem-solving process. Teams may showcase their solutions at a tournament.
