NEWARK, NJ - The South Orange Police Department joined New Jersey State Police (NJSP), the Essex County Sheriff's Office, and Newark Police on Feb. 18 in a pursuit which resulted in the arrest of Richard D. Williams (age 39), Terrell Norris (age 28) and a 16-year-old girl all of Newark, and an unidentified woman from East Orange, reported Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.

Two Newark Police officers were injured, and were transported to University Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. One of the suspects, Williams, was also transported to the hospital for treatment, stated Ambrose.

A few minutes before midnight, members of NJSP observed an Infiniti Q50 that had been reported stolen in Fairfield and was wanted in connection with a recent shooting and was suspected of being involved in several robberies and carjackings in Newark and in Essex County, stated Ambrose in a release.

According to Ambrose, the chase began in the Vailsburg section of Newark when NJSP spotted the car and requested the assistance of the Newark Police Division’s helicopter. The helicopter followed the Infiniti through several neighboring cities before the stolen vehicle crashed head-on into an unmarked Newark Police vehicle at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and Morris Avenue, stated Ambrose.

Using illumination from the helicopter, officers were able to quickly locate and apprehend the suspects. The impact of the crash injured the Newark Police officers and caused the stolen vehicle to become engulfed in flames, stated Ambrose.

Williams was found in possession of a loaded .38 handgun, and was charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Police Officer, three on Newark Police officers and one on a NJSP trooper, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, stated the release.

Norris, the unidentified woman from East Orange, and the juvenile, were all charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Resisting Arrest, stated Ambrose.

“This is an example in which the Newark Police Division, through the coordinated use of resources, apprehended three violent suspects without injury to any civilian and only minor injuries to the officers,” Ambrose said.

“The helicopter helped ensure everyone's safety by reducing the risks associated with high speed chases. The removal of these suspects and a gun from our streets also kept others from becoming crime victims. The investigation is continuing to determine the involvement with several other violent crimes in Newark and Essex County.”

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
