Street Dedication Ceremony Honoring Late Scoutmaster Ken Fineran Officially Scheduled
Sunday May 20 at 11:00 am

Millburn Township and Boy Scout Troop 17 of St. Rose of Lima will be honoring the life and accomplishments our beloved Scoutmaster Kenneth W. Fineran on Sunday, May 20th. Troop 17 Scouts, in conjunction with Millburn Township and St. Rose of Lima Church, have scheduled two events to celebrate the dedication of Fineran Way.

A Scout Sunday mass at St. Rose of Lima Church (50 Short Hills Ave, Short Hills, NJ) at 9am, immediately followed by a street dedication ceremony located on the corner of Canoe Brook Road and the Service Road leading to JFK Parkway at the southeast corner of the Mall at Short Hills. (GPS coordinates: 40.739486, -74.360049. Parking is available nearby in the parking deck for the Mall at Short Hills).

Scoutmaster Fineran was active in Scouting for 57 years. As a Scout he achieved the rank of Eagle in 1962 and received the Order of the Arrow Vigil honor in 1964. Fineran served as Scoutmaster of Troop 19, Panama Canal Zone, while on duty with the US Army.

After moving to Millburn in the 1970s, Fineran assumed the role of Scoutmaster of Troop 17, a position he held for the next 36 years until 2015. “Though he did not have children of his own, Ken touched the lives of so many, in ways that are simply immeasurable. He guided thousands of Scouts as they transitioned from boys into responsible young adults”, Committee Chairman James McKenna (1985 Eagle Scout under Fineran). Fineran helped 89 of these Scouts achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout during his 36 years as Scoutmaster.

Fineran received numerous awards for his contributions to Scouting, including the Silver Beaver Award (the highest award a council can bestow), the Unit Leader Award of Merit, Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and was inducted into the Lenape Trail District’s Hall of Fame.

Fineran was also active volunteer in the Millburn-Short Hills community beyond his role in Scouting. During his 40-plus years in Millburn, Fineran served on the Millburn-Short Hills Fourth of July Committee and the St. Rose of Lima Knights of Columbus.

“We are proud that a portion of what is now Canoe Brook Road will soon bestow the name “Fineran Way” with an honorarium sign signifying “Scoutmaster Ken Fineran.”, said Senior Patrol Leader and Eagle Scout, Jamie Serruto.

“When the Township Committee served up the opportunity for us as Millburn students to vote to rename a portion of Canoe Brook Road, our Troop, as students of Millburn, quickly mobilized to spread the word about “Scoutmaster Fineran Way” and we were successful in securing 56% of the submissions.”, said Serruto.

A miscommunication between the Millburn Township Committee and the Millburn Board of Education resulted in some controversy with the street naming. The students perceived they had right to “select” a street name as advertised versus the Committee’s claim that their intention was only to have the students “propose” a street name. “Through a strong belief in the democratic process, we decided to dig in and would not accept the defeat. With Jamie at the helm, he was amazing. He successfully lobbied the Township Committee members individually on our behalf.”, said Ryan Cannon. The Committee’s decided to overturn the self-proclaimed street name of Commerce Way and accepted the recommendation for Fineran Way.

“Although I was personally disappointed with our community leaders at first, I am pleased on how our Township Committee and Scouts worked collaboratively to recognize a township citizen that dedicated more than half of his life to the children of Millburn/Short Hills. I am particularly proud of my Scouts as they gained so much from this experience. They learned how to speak their minds, preserver through adversity, and work within the boundaries of a local governing body.” said Scoutmaster Cannon.
