As we heard about yet another school shooting today in Texas, I want to reiterate that we are committed to keeping our schools and students safe.  Since the Parkland shooting we have tightened security procedures at all of our schools, and we continue to review and refine them.  We added a number of important safety and security improvements to the 2018-2019 School Budget:

  • Security vestibule buzzer door locks
  • Security vestibule equipment
  • Additional cameras
  • Swipe card access
  • Outdoor lighting

We will be enhancing our procedures for identifying and notifying appropriate personnel about safety concerns. We partner with our staff, students, teachers, parents and police department to maintain the safety of our schools.

A key factor in school safety is being cognizant of students who may be struggling.  May is Mental Health Awareness Month! This year's national campaign theme is Fitness #4Mind4Body. The campaign is meant to educate and inform individuals about how physical health is connected to mental health. Eating healthy foods, managing stress, exercising, and getting enough sleep can go a long way in improving your mental health.  Find resources here.

I do want parents to be aware that Season 2 of the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why" starts today. You may remember that the first season of the show prompted parents, school counselors and other mental health counselors to use it as an opportunity to have difficult conversations with students about suicide and other mental health concerns.  I encourage you to talk to your child about the show, and make sure they know that school counselors and other school staff are there to help. Need Talking Points?

Parents are also invited to learn more at Caring Contact’s free Suicide Awareness & Interventiontraining at the Millburn Public Library on Wednesday, May 23 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. This is a follow-up to last night’s Breaking the Silence presentation, and it includes a 2-hour training during which they will share statistics about suicide,  risk and protective factors, as well as suicide intervention. Register here.

At Monday’s Board of Education meeting we will hear from additional candidates who are interested in filling the Board vacancy.  The Board will announce the decision at the June 4th BOE meeting. We will also have a discussion about proposed PreSchool hours for 2018-2019.  The recommendation is to adjust the times as noted:

Schedule Comparison:

Proposed (2018 - 2019)
