MILLBURN, NJ - On Monday, Business Administrator, Cheryl Schneider, and I presented the school district’s 2017-2018 Preliminary Budget at the Board of Education meeting. It will now be submitted to the County for review and approval, and we will hold the Public Hearing on the budget on April 24th at 7:45 p.m. at the Education Center.
Some of the priorities in the $87.4K SY budget are:

Technology: Servicing with the Apple Lease; Initial Chromebook implementation

Washington School: Personnel; Transportation; Maintenance & Utilities

I would like to focus on one of the priorities noted above: the initial implementation of Chromebooks, to be introduced next year in grades 5, 6 and 9. Providing individualized technology promises to advance teaching and learning, and increases engagement in the classroom for all of our 21st-century students.
At the April 3rd Board of Education meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Kyle Arlington, will share the district's roadmap for increased access to anytime, anywhere technology for the 2017-2018 school year in grades 5, 6 & 9.  The presentation entitled "21st Century Competencies:  The Digital Conversion" will focus on how the Chromebook initiative will move beyond simply note-taking and "remembering," and work towards transforming learning. A research-based "Case for Support" will also be shared at the time of the presentation.  Please join us to differentiate fact from fiction and learn more about this exciting endeavor!
Most Likely to Succeed

I invite you to learn more about how schools must innovate to prepare your children for their 21st-century futures at the presentation of the award-winning film, “Most Likely to Succeed,” on March 29. You have two opportunities to see this movie, at 11:30 a.m. at the Millburn Bow Tie Cinema (tickets required), or at 7:30 p.m. at the Millburn High School auditorium (free of charge, no ticket required). This film, based on the work of educator Tony Wagner, presents a new vision of American education, transitioning from a system designed during the Industrial Revolution for farmers and factory workers, to one that “puts wonder, creativity, and initiative at the very heart of the learning process to prepare students for today’s economy.”
