MILLBURN, NJ - I want to highlight some of the exciting activities happening at Millburn Middle School, and encourage you to stop in for one of several upcoming events to see the great things going on with our students and staff.

Next Thursday, March 9, to kick off a day of innovative excellence, the Middle School is holding MakerFest 2017. This event brings together middle school students from all grades to work out a design challenge. The students will collaborate during the day to complete the task, using group-work, design-thinking, planning, making and re-designing. They will test their solutions, and create presentation boards and videos that will be on display at Thursday night’s “Evening of Excellence.”

Plan to attend the “Evening of Excellence” to see for yourself! Start off with a delicious meal of soup in clay bowls handmade by our MMS Peer Leaders for the 8th Annual Empty Bowls event that raises awareness of hunger in our communities. Select your bowl, enjoy soup and bread from Whole Foods, and your donation of $15 will go to Down the Block Inc., and The Community FoodBank of NJ. Character Education in action!

Next Friday is the Middle School’s annual Career Day when 8th-grade students hear from parents and community members about their career journeys. Their stories help our children learn about different kinds of careers, and consider those that will combine their interests, lifelong learning and passions.

This is just the beginning of what our students will be able to achieve once our schools have added the planned innovative makerspaces that will allow for this kind of creative, challenging and cooperative learning every day. If you want to know and understand more about design thinking and reimagining the future of our education system, don’t miss the PTO Conference special presentation of the film “Most Likely to Succeed” on Wednesday, March 29.

My last plug today is for the performing arts -- the epitome of creative design challenge. Our spring theater productions are underway, and tickets are on sale now for Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID: The Musical at the Middle School on April 28, and April 29th at 7:00 and April 30th at 1:00 pm. Tickets are $15 and selling fast! Get yours at mms.booktix.com.

See you at the show!
