CALDWELL, NJ - The Millburn Girls Swim Team opened the 2017-2018 season with a win against the Verona Hillbillies at the Caldwell Community Center on Monday evening. The Lady Millers took command early and never let up.
Senior co-captain, Megan Balbo won the 200 and 500 Freestyle events. Sophomore, Alyssa Levy took the top spots in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Free. Sophomore, Emily Segal touched first in the 100 Breaststroke, while Freshman newcomer, Syon Lee sprinted her way to victory in the 50 Free and 100 Backstroke. The 200 Freestyle Relay (Freshman, Ruby Pollack, co-captain and Senior, Katy Shepard, Segal, and Levy) took an early lead, coming in well ahead of the pack. In the final event of the evening, the Miller Girls' 400 Freestyle Relay (Sophomore, Ellie Dessart, Lee, Freshman, Devin Genderson, and Balbo) finished first, sealing the win against Verona.
Coach Christopher D'Anna was pleased with the Fall opener. After losing twelve seniors last year, this meet gave him a chance to put a number of swimmers in the pool, evaluate and observe. "It is important to have team spirit and camaraderie. We have a lot of returning swimmers, with a lot of experience, so I'm looking forward to this season." D'Anna said. "I'm just glad they came out to swim, especially right after the Thanksgiving break."
Next up: Millburn Vs. West Essex on Thursday, November 30 at Newark Academy starting at 8 PM.
