MILLBURN, NJ – A woman driving a Toyota sedan sideswiped a parked car on Millburn Avenue today before crashing into an SUV parked on the same side of the street.
The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. directly in front of the French Nail Club at 357 Millburn Ave., across from the Bowtie Cinema.
Millburn police, who arrived at the scene minutes after a 911 call was placed, would not say whether they believed the driver was speeding or what caused the accident. The inertia of the Toyota was severe enough to move the SUV a full parking space length forward.
The Millburn/Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad arrived and put a neck brace on the driver before placing her on a gurney for transport to a local hospital. There is no current update of the injuries sustained by the woman, but witnesses said it appeared she injured her back to the extent she was unable to leave her car on her own after the crash.
The driver of the SUV had parked to get a coffee at Starbucks. Moments later, she heard a loud noise and rushed to the street. Noticing a crowd near her vehicle, she realized that her vehicle was smashed.
“All I know that is that I came out of Starbucks and heard a bunch of kids yelling," she said. "I looked and saw the car (Toyota) and they (EMTs) were pulling her out.”
Township resident Patty Hetherington was in the French Nail Club when the accident occurred. “When I came out, there was a loud skirmish with middle school students and I thought that another kid got hit," she said. "Then I saw the crash. The woman who caused the accident was distressed and didn’t know what had happened. Then I called 911.”
About 10 minutes later, a tow truck arrived. The operator encountered some difficulty separating the two vehicles, as the bumper of the Toyota was lodged tightly underneath the bumper of the SUV, but firefighters were eventually able to separate the vehicles.
The incident is currently under investigation, said police.
