MILLBURN, NJ –The Township of Millburn presented a proclamation October 5th to congratulate SAGE Eldercare for its Meals on Wheels 50th anniversary. SAGE serves about 44,000 meals to nearly 250 clients annually in 10 communities, including Millburn.

SAGE Eldercare began its Meals on Wheels in October 1966 with funding received from the Summit Junior League. Volunteers were recruited from various organizations such as the College Club, United Church Women, P.E.O., Red Cross, Women Pioneers of Bell Laboratories, and the Junior Fortnightly Club.

The proclamation in part states, “Sincerest congratulations are hereby extended to SAGE Eldercare and the Meals on Wheels program that has been serving communities with professional and highly trained staff whom provide a wide array of information, support, and services designed to help older adults lead the most independent and active lives possible within their communities, and creating an amazing place to age.”

Millburn Committeeman Robert Tillotson presented the proclamation at the October 5th Township Committee meeting, saying older adults are an important part of the Millburn community. “We are grateful for the services SAGE provides,” he said. “The Millburn Township Committee does hereby proclaim November 30, 2016 as SAGE Eldercare’s Meals on Wheels 50th anniversary in the Township of Millburn… and urge all citizens in joining in on the celebration and thanking SAGE Eldercare for continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of older adults in our community.”

Soon after the Meals on Wheels program began in 1966, the Millburn Red Cross chapter approached SAGE to partner with them to deliver meals in Millburn and Short Hills. “Every week day, for almost 50 years, the Red Cross sent volunteers to pick up food from SAGE and deliver it to residents. When the Red Cross chapter in Millburn closed recently, many of the volunteers became SAGE volunteers and never missed a beat in delivering meals,” said SAGE Executive Director Angela Sullivan, a Short Hills resident. “We are proud to offer the Meals on Wheels program at SAGE and feel privileged to provide this and many of our other services to the older adult residents in Millburn and Short Hills.”

SAGE Eldercare is committed to being the leading provider of programs and services to meet the changing needs of older adults, their families, and caregivers throughout Union, Essex, Morris, and Somerset Counties.  For more information, please call 908.273.5550 or visit www.sageeldercare.org.
