WEST ORANGE, NJ – Essex County Turtle Back Zoo will be closed this week so maintenance staff can clear snow from the walking paths. The zoo is expected to reopen on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo said the decision to close the zoo was based on safety reasons for visitors. The pathways at the zoo are narrow and the additional time is needed to remove the snow and make sure the walkways are safe.

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo Director Brint Spencer said the blizzard did not have any impact on the health or safety of the animals. There was no damage to the facility and no injuries to any animals. To prepare for the storm, keepers made meals for the animals in advance and a team of five staff members remained at the zoo throughout the blizzard to check on the welfare of the animals.
