SHORT HILLS, NJ – Short Hills residents Victoria Mak who attends Yale University and Monica Liu who attends Vanderbilt University received scholarships from the New Jersey Chinese Festival organization on Dec. 28.

The group marked 2017 as their fourth year giving the scholarships, said festival chair and Montville resident Margaret Lam. Ten students are honored with the freshman scholarship, plus two scholarships for political science students of any college year.

Lam began the New Jersey Chinese Festival in 1989 due to an invitation by Governor Thomas Kean Senior, she told TAPinto.

“The Chinese Festival is a statewide organization which I chair, and it is coordinated by the more than 120 Chinese organizations in New Jersey,” she said. “Ten thousand people attended the event each year for ten years at the then-Garden State Art Center, and then we relocated it to Liberty State Park when Garden State Art Center was privatized to PNC Bank Art Center.”

Lam said there were 34 applications for the scholarship in 2017: five for the political science and 29 for the freshman award.

The $1,000 scholarship recipients were:

Shuwei Ji of Plainsboro (Emory University) political science scholarship

Ryan Yu Jin of Martinsville (The College of NJ) political science scholarship

Annie Zhou of New Providence (Yale University)

Howie Shen of Livingston (NYU)

Daniel Zhou of Lake Hopatcong (Yale)

Courtney Zeng of Edison (Dartmouth University)

Monica Liu of Short Hills (Vanderbilt University)

Cindy Qiang of Westfield (NYU)

Victoria Mak of Short Hills (Yale University)

Tiffany Yu of Livingston (Carnegie Mellon University)

Brian Wei of Bridgewater (Carnegie Mellon University)

Scholarship funding came from donors Margaret Lam, David Yen, The Kaman Food Foundation, New Century Realty, Ms Kay Liu and I-Creative Group.

The scholarship judges were Margaret Lam, David Yen, Tom and Barbara Mazzaccaro, Michael Johnson, Wellman Wu, Bill Woo, Daniel Chou and Kay Liu.
