SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Many volunteers from South Orange, Maplewood and Millburn spent a breezy afternoon removing debris from the Rahway River on Sunday, helping beautify our local natural reserves. The event, sponsored by the South Orange Environmental Commission, was held on the Sunday May 4 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and included a performance by the musical puppeteers The Rejuvenary River Circus.

Organizer Jim McGowan told me that because of local volunteers efforts, "The East Branch of the Rahway River is already bouncing back in surprising ways, with turtles nesting on the banks, rare birds returning, and larger fish appearing. River Day in the future should embrace towns along the entire length of the Rahway."

Over the past two years more than two tons of trash has been removed by local volunteers.  The event not only beautifies our community, but promotes environmental education and awareness.
