MILLBURN NJ- The next generation of “big-shot” directors is closer than you think as proven by the ten outstanding short films screened in the 3rd Annual Millburn Film Festival on Thursday evening in the Millburn High School Auditorium.

Guests walked the red carpet, had their pictures taken by “paparazzi” and received complimentary popcorn, creating a true Hollywood mood for the event.

Dozens of young directors submitted films in the hopes of being honored at the festival, but only nine were chosen for screening and eligible for the top awards.

Whether laughing at the clever scripts of "Zeitgeist Productions Presents," directed by Meri Sheiner and Nicole LaChance or the film entitled "Written," directed by Kyle Farscht or marveling at the breathtaking cinematography from both "My Second Home," directed by Jeremy Hochman and "Cowboys of Chincoteague," directed by Ethan Stupp, the production quality and inventiveness of the entries was immediately evident.

Moved by the touching stories of "Life in 5 Short Chapters," by Emma Quong and "Connected," directed by Hannah Geller, these films added a somber but satisfying mood to the event.

Finally, the amazing visual effects on display in "Voodoo," directed by Max Retik, "iShrink," directed by Jasen Aziz and "Dream," directed by Alex DeRosa, illustrated how simple stories can be told in wildly original and visually exciting ways.

The films screened this evening were expertly chosen and all were deserving of the awards voted on by the panel of film industry judges. The results of the voting will be announced after fan voting has been completed prior to the next screening event on April 16.

Adding to the excitement of the night, Cathy Scorsese, a Millburn High School alumna, spoke about the opportunities for creative expression as a student in Millburn as well as her successful career directing and producing films and television in Los Angeles. Ms. Scorsese also thanked her past teachers including principal Dr. Miron and current English teacher, Miss Krueger for their support and advice. Finally, she thanked the Millburn Arts Advisory Committee for planning the event as well as the panel of judges for their expertise and guidance for the young directors.

Although the Millburn film festival was open to only middle school and high school students, first graders, Julian and Luke Chua nearly stole the show. Their short claymation film, “The Super Smartboard” was selected as a special entry. In the film, these 7 yr old directors demonstrated (in clay figures) how teachers use Smartboards to instruct students. The Chua brothers are as talented as they are adorable.

If you missed the April 10 screening of the Millburn Film Festival but are curious and would like to see these incredible films, you’re in luck! There will be a second showing of the specially selected entries at the Millburn Bow-Tie Cinema on Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a.m.
