The Millburn Education Association is in a labor dispute with the Millburn Board of Education and has filed for impasse. A state-appointed mediator has been assigned and the first mediation session between the two parties took place on April 25.

Members of the Millburn Education Association began rallying before the mediation session, carrying signs and fighting off the rain to make their voices heard. Chanting “we want a contract,” and “we are committed, are you?”, the MEA members have been working under an expired contract since July 2017. The MEA and the board of education have met multiple times, and yet the two parties cannot reach a settlement. The union is seeking to maintain the language within their expired contract as well as fair increases in salary and relief and containment of their contributions to health benefits mandated under Chapter 78, a law enacted in 2010.

Since the parties could not reach a settlement, the mediator has the authority to meet another two to three times if he feels a settlement can be reached.  The next meeting with the mediator is scheduled for May 29, 2018.

The union is hopeful that a settlement can be reached and will be available to meet, with or without the mediator.
