— Author Odette Williams, Simple Cake, comes to Millburn, June 6 —

MILLBURN, NJ - Started in June, 2018,  Book to Plate is a monthly cookbook series hosted by Farm & Fork Society and The Book House. This coming June, the series will mark its one year anniversary with an event featuring author Odette Williams. Her book, “Simple Cake” was honored with the best cookbooks of Spring 2019 by the New York Times.

Book to Plate was conceived by Melissa Goldberg founder of Farm & Fork Society and Nadege Nicoll of The Book House, to combine the two things they both love — books and food. Guests are invited to meet cookbook authors and sample a selection of their recipes, made from locally grown produce — thus bringing the cookbooks to life. These are one-of-a-kind events, planned monthly, to bring amazing produce, authors, and books, all in one place. Attendees join the company of like-minded friends who value the health of their body, mind, and environment. The popularity of the series has spun off into the monthly Book to Plate Cookbook Club that has a wait list each month.

Since last year, events have included a canning demonstration by Marisa McClellan of “Food in Jars”, a cooking demo by Ian Knauer, founder of The Farm Cooking School and author of a cookbook by the same title. Guests listened to Ian Yalof, author of “Food in The City” talk about the many fabulous food purveyors of Manhattan, while munching on the famous Cronut, Levain cookies and Riker’s Island Carrot cake. In April, young chefs Liz Alpern and Jeffrey Yoskowitz, authors of “The Gefilte Manifesto” discussed Passover dishes and how they are refining Jewish food. Beth Nydick and Tara Roscioli of “Clean Cocktails: Righteous Recipes for the Modern Mixologist”, thrilled everyone when explaining how to have a cocktail without ruining health conscious choices. Amatuer bakers showed off their best pies at a community pie contest with bestselling author Eva Lesko Natiello of “The Memory Box” who highlighted pies in literature. Local Short Hills author Laura Fromm told us all about her memoir/cookbook “Sweet Survival: Talks of Copying and Cooking”. On May 22 author John Holl of “Dishing up NJ” will take us on a food tour of the Garden State wile guests get to try Town Hall Deli of South Orange famous sloppy Joes and other NJ goodies.

For a sweet celebration of its one year anniversary, Book To Plate will host Odette Williams on June 6 at 6:30 PM at The Book House located at 281 Essex Street in Millburn. Attendees will discuss what goes into simple cakes and get to taste some of the author’s delicious recipes, including Chocolatey Chocolate Cake. After the talk Williams will be signing copies of her book. William’s “Simple Cake” gives recipes for 10 base cakes, 15 toppings, and endless decorating ideas to yield a treat--such as Milk & Honey Cake, Coconut Cake, Summer Berry Pavlova, and Chocolatey Chocolate Cake--for any occasion.

Event cost is $23. This includes a copy of “Simple Cake” or $23 gift card to The Book House, to be used on a future purchase in the store.
