One River School of Art + Design Summer Camp (July 30-August 3)

Sculpting with Clay | 3rd - 5th Grade | 9:30 - 12

From high and low relief sculpture to free standing sculpture in the round, students will learn the diverse styles and methods of working with the versatile medium of clay. Through the processes of experimenting and working with clay, students will learn fundamental sculpting techniques, and demonstrate their understanding of three-dimensional art making.

 

Patterns of Matisse | k - 2nd Grade | 12:30 - 3

Henri Matisse’s late artistic career concentrated on creating beautiful patterns, collages and colorful paper cut-outs.  In this course students will study Matisse’s patterns as well as the poetic passages, tapestries and embroideries that inspired their creation. Focus will be placed on texture, color, design and composition as students create their original patterns in drawings and paintings.

 

Street Art Painting | 6th - 12th Grade | 9:30 - 12

The recent street-art movement marked by artists like Banksy has placed graffiti on the map and grown to be an accepted creative outlet. In this course young students will study graffiti as a base for making their own street-art paintings. Students will work on large-scale wood panels using acrylic spray paint.  

 

Portfolio Development | 10th - 12th Grade | 12:30 - 5:30 (2 week course)

Our Portfolio Development program is an intensive 2 week course for high school students who are serious about art, and are looking to concentrate in this field at the college and university level. This course will guide students in creating a comprehensive portfolio that showcases their skills and creativity to secure their acceptance to college art programs.

 

Learn Your Camera | 6th - 12th Grade | 9:30 - 12

This course introduces beginners to the creative and technical principles of digital photography through intensive practice in shooting images and manipulating your camera.  Students will explore manual and automatic functions and learn to create compelling images by controlling settings, lighting, composition and exposure.  Projects will include shooting portraits, figures, still life and landscapes in different settings, lighting and conditions to produce a body of work that showcases a variety of themes. Students are required to bring their own digital camera to camp.

 

Digital Cartooning | 6th - 12th Grade | 12:30 - 3

This class is designed for students who want an intensive digital experience in the art of cartooning, spanning from character development, narrative writing, background basics, comic strip writing, graphic storytelling and page composition. Students work in Adobe Photoshop and Wacom tablets to produce digital cartoons in the form of printable comic books, webcomics, posters and illustration covers.  Students will explore a variety of cartooning genres including manga, science fiction, fantasy, action/adventure, horror, humor, romance and superhero/villain themes.  The class will survey character expression, movement, body language, as they construct cartoons from memory, observation and imagination.  Instructors will introduce students to the history of cartooning and the work of cartoonists such as Tim Burton, Art Spiegelman, Lynda Barry and Scott McCloud.  Students learn to use different digital brushstrokes while understanding visual characteristics such as transparency, symmetry, texture, embossing and creating 3D illusions.  The option to undo brush strokes and other actions, permits a more spontaneous, intuitive way of working than is possible in traditional painting.  Students use Wacom tablets and stylus pens to create fluid linework.

Mary Patricia Colicchio of Millburn Passes Away at Age 56

August 11, 2018

MILLBURN, NJ - Mary Patricia Colicchio, who taught history and film studies at Summit High School since 2003, passed away August 4 at the age of 56. She had been battling pancreatic cancer since being diagnosed in August of 2017.
