MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn High School’s spring musical, Footloose, premiered on Friday, Feb 28.
The show follows the life of high school senior, Ren McCormack. After his father leaves the family, Ren and his mother, move from Chicago to the small, conservative town of Bomont. In Bomont, minister Shaw Moore lays down the law, including a law banning dancing.
Ren, after coming from the big city, is baffled by such a restriction on freedom. With the help of the minister's daughter, Ariel, Ren tries to bring dancing and joy back to Bomont.
The Millburn High School Limelight Players wowed the audience with their vocals. Different from other musicals performed recently at the school, Footloose featured more group choreography. The moves ranged from classic line dancing to smooth slow dancing.
The cast featured many more sophomores and freshman than usual, meaning there was even more talent. “In the past, many of the shows have been mostly upperclassmen,” cast member Jacob Pollack said, “but this year, there is such a big cast with kids from all different grades. It has been awesome getting to know so many new people.”
This year, the spring musical also had a new director and choreographer, Lindsay Maron. As a Millburn High School alumnus, Maron knew firsthand what it meant to balance school with musical practice. She brought her expertise from Northwestern University and her theatre company, Pixie Dust Players, and the results were evident.
Thanks to the cast and crew’s hard work, the audience was able to feel the infectious joy of the show and understand how dancing truly means freedom. It’s rare when a show is able to resonate past the stage like that. The disco ball, confetti, and big smiles during the last number certainly helped. During the curtain call, audience members gave a standing ovation, many of them dancing along to the title song, “Footloose.”
There are still two more performances: one on Saturday Feb. 29th at 7:30 pm and one on Sunday March 1st at 1:00 pm. Tickets are going fast, so make sure you purchase yours soon at https://mhsnj.booktix.com.
