MILLBURN, NJ - A familiar face is back around town in Millburn, as Commander Jonathan Sym of the US Navy and the Managing Editor for TAPinto Millburn returned from a year-long deployment. In July 2017, Sym embarked on orders based in Baumholder, Germany to support Operation Freedom’s Sentinel which focuses on training, advising, assisting as well as counter-terrorism operations.
“Every member of the military will tell you the same thing. The hardest thing about being deployed is being so far from the family. “
Sym served as Chief of Staff, Special Operations Command Forward, North and West Africa (SOCFWD-NWA). This command is a joint headquarters made up of Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines supporting special forces in Africa including the Army Green Berets and Navy Seals. The mission is to advise, assist, accompany and train African partner forces to combat violent extremist organizations (VEO).
“It was an honor and a privilege to work with the Special Forces teams from the Army and Navy. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.”
Sym returns to the Millburn community not only in his role as Managing Editor of TAPinto Millburn/Short Hills, but also to his naval reserve unit as Deputy Cyber Syndicate Manager, NATO Allied Command Transformation, DET Chicago. Sym is also an active participant in many community organizations including serving as a board member for the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce and was recently confirmed as Vice President of the Short Hills Association.
“I want to thank my family, friends and colleagues who have supported me throughout the year while I was deployed. Without them, I couldn’t have done my job.”
Sym was commissioned in the US Navy in 1999. His previous deployments included; Deputy Chief of Staff, NATO HQ in Skopje, Macedonia ISO of Kosovo Operations; Logistics Officer, Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay.
