MILLBURN, NJ - As part of the Millburn Board of Education (BOE) meeting held at the Millburn Middle School, two new board members were selected to fill a pair of vacancies in the organization.

With the sudden departure of BOE Vice-President Kate Foss and board member Jennifer Woodhouse in Dec. , a notice was put out announcing the openings. 11 candidates stepped forward and made their case to fill the vacancies. They were Philip Choong, Sonali Ganti, Simon Heaton, Jordana Horn, Praveen Kandala, Ranjeeta Nanda, David Schlossman, Jyoti Sharma, Cate Smith, Jing Wen and John Westfall-Kwong.

Each candidate was given three minutes to present, and after every one had gone, the board adjourned to executive session for final deliberations. After returning, the board nominated Westfall-Kwong and Ganti for the seats, and voted them in with an open roll-call vote. Westfall-Kwong had previously served on the BOE from 2013-2016 and has also served as the board president. Ganti will be in her first term on the board.

After the meeting, current BOE President Alex Zaltsman said that he was confident in the abilities of the two new board members moving forward.

"I'm overly confident [in them]," he said. "And I'm very excited about their skill sets, their commitment to our community and their personal achievements and I look forward to working with them."

For the two new board members, the opportunity to work with the Millburn BOE is something they will both enjoy.

"It's great to be back," Westfall-Kwong said. "And I'm looking forward to my time, spending some great time with some excellent board members."

Ganti was also ready to start working with the BOE as well.

"I'm very excited," she said. "I want to hit the ground running. I've been excited about it for a few weeks since [the vacancy has] been announced."

Having been selected, Westfall-Kwong and Ganti will both be sworn in at the next Millburn BOE meeting on Jan. 28.
