SHORT HILLS, NJ – After 20 years at The Mall at Short Hills, Joe’s American Bar & Grill is shutting its doors after this Saturday, March 31.
Joe’s American Bar & Grill is part of the Sarkis Restaurant Group family of restaurants, founded in 1964 as Back Bay Restaurant Group in Braintree, Massachusetts. Papa Razzi, also owned by the Sarkis Restaurant Group, will similarly be affected and shares the same closing date.
According to a Joe’s American Bar & Grill spokesperson, the popular eatery and Papa Razzi, its Italian-food counterpart, were forced to suddenly close due to the unexpected passing of owner, Charles Sarkis, two weeks ago.
“We have not yet released any details on our plans for these spaces,” said Janet Cesario, Marketing & Sponsorship Director at The Mall at Short Hills. “We will certainly share news with the community when the timing is right.”
Jessica Smith, a Livingston resident who visited the restaurant for one last meal at Joe’s on Friday after a day of shopping with her mother and sister, said it was a shame to hear of the restaurant’s closing.
“This was not only a place to sit down and eat after shopping at the mall, but also a destination for anyone in Livingston and other nearby towns looking for a good burger,” said Smith. “Joe’s has been a regular spot for us, so when we heard the news, we knew we needed to make a point to eat here one more time before it’s gone.”
“Since my other daughter and I no longer live in Livingston, this was a central place for us to reconvene for burgers and martinis,” said her mother, Jayne Pendergast. “Whatever replaces Joe’s at the Short Hills Malls has big shoes to fill.”
Joe’s American Bar & Grill and Papa Razzi, both located at 1200 Morris Turnpike in Short Hills, will be open for their last day in business on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
