SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Local residents started a Go Fund Me page for a resident who died in a fire last Friday.
The page, Transportation/Funeral Expenses: Cecilia Cranko, is raising money to help cover funeral costs and transportation costs since her mother is flying from South Africa to attend the funeral.
Cranko, 48, died on Friday in a house fire inside her home on Ward Place. She was a well-known LGBTQ activist in the community, an architect and member of the South Orange Zoning Board of Adjustment.
So far the campaign has raised $8,599 and continues to trend. It is looking for donations by Wednesday, July 10.
"Our community has suddenly lost a vibrant member," the campaign reads.
Cranko was found unresponsive on the third floor of her home shortly after 2:30 on Friday morning as firefighters put out a blaze that burned through her home.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Crime Scene Investigations Bureau is investigating what caused the fire.
