MIDDLESEX COUNTY, N.J. — Peter Nguyen, Millburn High School's head volleyball coach and a bookkeeper for the Millburn Township Board of Education, was arrested today and charged with one count of sexual contact with a 14-year old female who was a member of the Impact Volleyball Club. Nguyen also faces two second degree counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one count for giving alcohol to the minor and one third-degree count of aggravated criminal sexual contact.
The Woodbridge Police Department opened an investigation after the victim's parents alerted the authorities. The investigation determined that on two occasions Nguyen inappropriately sexually touched the victim who he supplied with alcohol during both instances.
Nguyen has been a bookkeeper for the Millburn Board of Education and also served as the head volleyball coach for three years, leading the lady millers to a 11-12 record in the 2017 season.
The Millburn Board issued the following statement on the matter. "The Millburn Township Board of Education has been made aware of criminal allegations made against one of its employees. The Board is unable to comment about that employee’s terms and conditions of employment or the specific allegations made against the employee. To the extent that the criminal allegations may impact the District, we will be fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
The statement continued with the focus on faculty and staff, "However, the Board remains first and foremost committed to supporting the Millburn Township School District students, faculty, and community. One of the most important priorities of the Board is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for its students. School counselors are continually available to provide support to our students and staff members, and to make sure that there is always an opportunity for all to communicate any concerns."
The Millburn Athletics Department and Millburn High School Principal Dr. Miron did not have any additional comments beyond the statement from the board.
Nguyen is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center awaiting his next hearing scheduled for Thursday.
