SHORT HILLS, NJ,  —  The Rev. Bowie Snodgrass has announced that The Rev. Tristan Shin has joined Christ Church in Short Hills as Assistant Pastor.  Pastor Shin will assist as a Celebrant and Preacher for Sunday worship and other special services.  He also will focus on dedicated efforts to build upon the ministries of Pastoral Care, Community Outreach and Adult Religious Education.   

“We are thrilled that Tristan has joined our family at Christ Church in Short Hills as he brings a dynamic, spiritual energy to our ministry,” stated Rev. Snodgrass.  “Tristan’s interest in public theology and faith in contemporary life emanates from his own deeply-centered religious journey, international experiences and perspective as a millennial from a multi-generational clergy family.”

Rev. Shin was ordained a Lutheran minister in 2015 and for the most recent three years served as the Senior Pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Palmyra, New Jersey.  During that time, he also was the Police Chaplain for Burlington County.  Rev. Shin attended the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia and received a Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Arts degree in Public Leadership, a combination of theological studies and social work at Temple University.  Previously, Rev. Shin had served as a case manager for transitional and supportive housing for the homeless population with Lutheran Social Services of New York, which he credits with “rekindling a deeper desire to pursue higher education in social work.”  He earned his undergraduate degree in Forensic Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York,

Born in Korea, Pastor Shin’s father moved him and his mother to Toronto to pursue missionary work for the United Church of Canada and later immigrated to New York upon his father’s appointment as pastor of a Korean Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.  Pastor Shin is proud of his Korean-American heritage, which he believes gives him “an open-minded perspective to bridge conversations with people of all faiths and backgrounds.”  

Rev. Shin resides in West Orange, New Jersey with his fiancée Kayla Feifer and their rescue dog, Chewbacca, and cat, Bentley.  As a personal interest, Tristan and Kayla are active in video gaming and operate an interactive online streaming channel to share interests and engage in theological dialogue within the gaming community.   

“I am excited to work alongside Rev. Bowie to participate in the church ministries serving members of the Christ Church in Short Hills family and reaching beyond to make a difference within our communities.  I am eager to start this next chapter of my life’s story,” said Rev. Shin.

Christ Church in Short Hills, established in 1882, serves within the Episcopal Diocese of Newark and celebrates worldwide Anglican Communion.   The Episcopalian and Lutheran churches have shared in full communion since 2000 under a common mission agreement.
