SHORT HILLS, NJ - This season, Community Congregational Church in Short Hills is holding a Thanksgiving meal sponsorship program, which provides the ingredients for a full Thanksgiving dinner to a family in Irvington for every $25 donation received. Since the program’s launch at the beginning of November, over forty meals have already been sponsored.
Just five miles outside of Short Hills, communities of people live at or below the poverty line, with little to no access to healthy, fresh food. Through Community Church’s partnership with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to fight hunger and poverty, the ingredients for healthy and delicious Thanksgiving dinners have been made available at a subsidized price, allowing donors to provide full meals for families at a price as low as $25.
“These Thanksgiving sponsorships provide the people of Irvington with more than just a balanced meal,” says Community Church’s Senior Minister, The Rev. Dr. Johann Bosman. “They can give people hope, letting them know that their neighbors - even though they are strangers - care about them and their well-being.”
Community Church is dedicated to serving the people of Irvington year-round through its Oasis Food Pantry program, which is operated in conjunction with the Irvington Public School District and the Community FoodBank. Every month, volunteers from Community Church and the Imani Center in Irvington distribute bags of groceries and fresh produce, obtained through Community FoodBank, to families in need in Irvington. Over the past year, Oasis has begun distributing diapers for infants as well. This Thanksgiving meal sponsorship is another way that Community Church is fulfilling its mission to support and serve its neighbors in Irvington, and is a way to spread compassion and hope to those who need both.
