MILLBURN, NJ - It had been a long time coming for Taylor Liu, but in the first round of the Esssex County Tournament, Liu reached the career milestone of 1000 digs in a win over Payne Tech.
Having reached the milestone, Liu, a senior libero becomes the first player in the recorded history of the program to hit the mark. Over three years on the varsity team, here is how Liu's digs by season line up:
- 2017- 376 digs
- 2018- 280 digs
- 2019- 365 digs (and counting)
For Millburn Volleyball Head Coach Bill Rentiers, Liu is a vital part of his roster, which has cruised thus far in the season.
"She is one of our best passers on the team," Rentiers said in an email to TAPinto. "One of her best qualities is her ability in serve receive. When opponents serve tough, she makes great passes."
Rentiers also noted that Liu brings a calming presence and is a leader on the team.
This is my second year as head coach at Millburn," he added. "During my first season I made Taylor one of our captains as a Junior. She brings a calming presence to the team and leads by example.
"I always know she has the ability to motivate the team when the team needs it. She can rally the team when we are down, with some positive words, and she never gives up. She is admired my players and coaches for her hard work and dedication."
Speaking about her accomplishment, Liu said that it was in part, a testament to all the women she's seen play libero before her.
"I've been a part of the program since my sister was playing volleyball," Liu said. "And I've been watching all the liberos since then, and they're all really good...now, in my senior year, i was able to accomplish something and become such an important part of the program, it really means a lot to me."
Liu also added that for her, while the individual accolades like her milestone dig are important, it is the overall success of her team that makes her happiest.
Liu and the rest of the Millburn Volleyball team will be in action this morning in the final of the Essex County Tournament. They will take on Caldwell, with first serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Mount Saint Dominic Academy.
