WEST ORANGE, NJ — After a 3-3 draw against West Essex to open their season, Millburn Ice Hockey took the ice again less than 24 hours later for a matchup against the Montville Mustangs.
However, the Millers would find themselves on the end of a different result this time around in a 4-1 loss. Montville received two goals from Connor Perez and a goal each from Danny Scheine and Aiden Engle. Ryan Potechin notched the only Millburn goal with an assist from Duncan Stewart."
Speaking after the game, Potechin spoke to what he said the players needed to do to get into the win column this season.
"I think we've been playing pretty well in our first two games," Potechin said. "We've been working hard, we've been right on them. We've been controlling the game most of the time, it's just bounces haven't gone our way. We mostly just have to shore up our d-zone, cover the open man...and we'll be good."
For Millburn Head Coach Brandon Doria, some of the same things Potechin saw on the ice were visible to him from behind the bench.
"I think we just have to concentrate a little bit more on our d zone," Doria said, echoing Potechin. "The goals tonight and the goals last night were just breakdowns. And they're not just breakdowns, they're bad break downs...today there was two goals a kid just tapped into an empty net."
"So we need to focus on that," Doria added. "If we're going to have a breakdown, we've got to at last have some kind of backup plan where someone's on the back post. [Goaltender] Eli [Nadell] has been playing really well, but he can't do anything when the guy's standing there with an empty net, so we've just got get our d zone working and our power play, so we've got to make sure we get that back on track as well."
There is little time to dwell on the loss, as the team will be right back at it again on Monday, playing Nutley at Codey Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
