Nominees for the 2017 Eclipse Awards have been announced. Voters from the Daily Racing Form, the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Assn. (of which I am a member) and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association will select the winners.

The Eclipse Awards program is sponsored by the Daily Racing Form, the Breeders' Cup and the Stronach Group.

The deadline for voters is Jan. 2, 2018. I will be sending in my ballot on Jan. 1 after all the graded stakes for 2017 have been run at Santa Anita Park.

A website version of my ballot, along with comments on why I voted the way I did, will appear here after the ballot box closes.

The awards will be made at the 47th annual Eclipse Awards Banquet at Gulfstream Park, Hallendale Beach, Fla. on Jan. 25, 2018.

Television and/or streaming arrangement of the awards ceremonies are still pending.

Here are all of the Grade 1 winners in 2017 to date with their trainers and the Grade 1 races each horse has won this year in the United States, Canada and the Dubai World Cup.

Those horses that were nominated but did not win a Grade 1 race this year have been eliminated from this list since they would be rated below the Grade 1 winners in the voters' considerations.

Additional awards will be made to the leading owner, trainer, jockey, apprentice jockey and breeder.

At the track…Long Shot Aunt Babe Win Division of N.Y. Stallion Series

Louis Ferrari's home bred Aunt Babe, the second longest price on the tote board at 39 to 1, came from last place in a field of six 2-year-old fillies to win the $150,000 Fifth Avenue Division of the New York Stallion Series at Aqueduct on Dec. 16.

With Eric Cancel in the saddle for trainer James Ferraro, the dark bay or brown filly ran the six furlongs in 1:12.92 to win by a nose over Pure Silver. Miss Hot Stones, the 4 to 5 favorite was another half length behind in third in the 33rd running of the Fifth Avenue.

Aunt Babe's win was her first win against stakes company in her third try and raised her purse earnings to $127,500.

She is a daughter of Desert Party from the Silver Deputy mare Bella Silver. Desert Party stands at the Irish Hill Century Farm at Stillwater in Saratoga County.

The win was the third on the afternoon — all at handsome prices — for the journeyman Cancel. He took the fifth race with Bluegrass Prevails at $14.40 and the sixth with seeking the Blue at $35.40. Aunt Babe paid $81 to her $2 backers.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
