No one can claim boredom once July 4th rolls around. In New Jersey, there’s no shortage of fun planned activities you can attend. Although firework displays are definitely a highlight, you will also have the chance to enjoy free concerts and taste amazing food.

Revolutionary Celebration

For the fifth annual year, Morris County is turning back the clocks to the 18th century to celebrate our founding fathers. At the Morristown National Historic Park, a free concert is being held on July 2nd. The festivities continue on the Morristown Green on July 4th. Beginning at noon, there will be Revolutionary War themed activities and a variety of vendors. Fireworks are also scheduled for the fourth.

Head to the Beach

Go east to the shore for a fabulous July 4th.  The city of Long Branch holds a fun-filled annual event called Oceanfest on their massive boardwalk. Starting at noon on Tuesday, you can walk the boards to visit dozens of food trucks and craft tents. Musical acts and kiddie performers will also be performing throughout the day. Stay late and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display over the ocean.

Food Truck Festival

In Summit, NJ, you can attend the town’s annual July 4th festival at Soldiers Memorial Field. Although fireworks are part of the entertainment, there’s so much more to do. From 6 pm, there will be rides running and an interactive concert for all ages. This year, more food trucks than ever are expected to attend to fulfill hearty appetites.

Best Fireworks

If you want to view the area’s (and possibly the country’s) best fireworks display, then you must go to Exchange Place in Jersey City on July 4th. Seeing the orchestrated fireworks above the Statue of Liberty will renew your patriotism and leave you breathless. Featured performers at the event include the B Street Band and Kool & the Gang.  Please note that due to the New Jersey state government, the event will be held at Exchange Place in New Jersey.  It was originally scheduled for Liberty State Park.  For more information, go to Jersey City's Facebook page here.

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote (Random House, 1965)

In Cold Blood is, quite simply, the grand-daddy of true crime writing, dubbed by Capote, himself, as the first non-fiction novel (although Norman Mailer argued the point when he published The Executioner's Song in 1979.) The conditions under which I read In Cold Blood for the first time were pretty weird, which was another ...
