EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Temple B'nai Shalom and The Daniel Pearl Education Center are hosting renowned author Dr. Shirley Wachtel on Tuesday, April 25th at 7:00pm for an engaging discussion tied to My Mother's Shoes, her moving memoir of her mother, a Holocaust survivor.

Described as “an evocative, moveable feast plumbing past and present with equal grace,” the memoir, spanning over fifty years, alternates the voices of Blima, her American alter-ego, Betty, and her daughter, Shirley. Ultimately, My Mother’s Shoes conveys the resilience of the human spirit and is a testimony to the power of family, as it depicts the unbreakable bonds between a mother and daughter living in Brooklyn after the mother flees from the ashes of the Holocaust.  The novel expands upon the successful The Story of Blima—A Holocaust Survivor, and answers the question of what happens to Blima when she forges a new life.

Dr. Wachtel, a 30-year resident of East Brunswick, is a professor at Middlesex County College and is also the author of the novel The Music Makers, several children's books and college textbooks.  She has appeared at the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC.  Her next book, Three for a Dollar, a compilation of original short stories, will be published this June.

Admission is free and will take place at Temple B'nai Shalom at 15 Fern Road in East Brunswick.  Contact the temple office at 732-251-4300 with any questions.
