NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – A three-alarm fire this morning destroyed eight apartments and left its occupants homeless, according to officials.
Police and firefighters responded to 19 Willowbrook Drive at 8:13 Tuesday morning to find multiple units of an apartment building 19 engulfed in flames.
Arriving police officers found an adult female and a child on one of the balconies, trying to escape the inferno.
The officer coaxed the female to drop the baby from the second floor balcony to him, and then to jump herself.
He was able to safely catch both of them, police said, and they were taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
Firefighters from North Brunswick Volunteer Fire companies 1,2 and 3 battled the blaze for several hours and kept the damage confined to building 19, police said.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries when they were struck by debris from the roof. North Brunswick EMS treated them at the scene, police said.
Units from Milltown, East Brunswick (Brookview), New Brunswick and Franklin responded to the scene, police said.
The eight units were completely destroyed and the fire marshal is investigating the cause with detectives from the police department, police said.
