SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ –Senator Patrick Diegnan and Senate President Stephen Sweeney have sponsored legislation that will designate August 29, 2017 as Governor James Florio Day in the State of New Jersey. This date coincides with the Governor’s 80th birthday.

“His ideas and ideals are ringing examples of courageous political leadership in gun control, education, economic reform, and environmental protections that provided a model for standing up to the economic and social challenges of our times,” said Senator Diegnan, D-Middlesex. “Governor Florio Day will in some small way reflect the appreciation of the people of New Jersey to a devoted public servant who represented his fellow citizens in the U.S. House of Representatives and as Governor of New Jersey for over two decades and who fought for children to know education's promise, and families to know new opportunity”.

“Jim Florio is one of New Jersey’s most respected and distinguished statesmen,” said Senator Sweeney. “He demonstrated the courage of his convictions by putting the needs of the people he served ahead of personal political ambitions. As a member of the New Jersey Legislature, as a member of Congress and as Governor, he always acted on behalf of those in need. His reputation and his stature has grown over the years.”

The pending bill would decree August 29, 2017 as Governor James Florio Day in the State of New Jersey in recognition of his many outstanding contributions to this State and the nation. During his term as Governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994, Governor Florio accomplished signing into law the Clean Water Enforcement Act (1990), which was the strongest environmental law of its type in the United States, the Quality Education Act, which provided greater equity in New Jersey’s school finance system, a landmark welfare reform package, and the nation’s toughest assault weapons ban.

A companion bill will also be introduced in the New Jersey Assembly by Assemblywoman Nancy Pinkin, Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak and Assemblyman Craig Coughlin.
