EDISON, NJ - Today is International Overdose Awareness Day. Assemblywoman Nancy J. Pinkin has sponsored a number of bills that have been signed into law focused on curbing drug abuse and overdoses, including the "Overdose Prevention Act," and a second bill that allows for the safe disposal of expired medicines.
The Overdose Prevention Act includes encouragements to police departments, pharmacists, and individuals to get the support and medication to the people who need them to prevent a medical emergency involving opiod use. Opiod and heroin abuse are currently at elevated levels in New Jersey. According NJ Spotlight, "One of the most controversial of these measures- presented by Assemblywoman Pinkin and State Senator Joseph Vitale - (S-2366/A-3712) would require doctors to talk with patients about addiction when they prescribe opioids.
