EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -   You asked for it, and you got it, East Brunswick.  New businesses are opening on Route 18 and are already becoming active members of the community.  Last week, before Stella the Storm had us all shut in our houses, Mayor Brad Cohen and members of the East Brunswick Town Council celebrated the opening of a new Burlington retail store on Route 18.

Burlington occupies most of the building formerly operated as a Pathmark, which closed its doors in 2015. The selling floor is expansive and varied merchandise is priced to move.  Shortly, a liquor store and an Aldi supermarket will fill in the remainder of the location.  K-Mart, located nearby, will close next month.

Among the 76 "crew members" at Burlington are Joann Patetta of East Brunswick, who is starting a second career after retiring from the East Brunswick Board of Education and Sueann Rafferty  a 25-year Milltown resident.  Stationed at the front registers near the "impulse-buy" items, the women represent the new work opportunities provided by growing employment outlets on East Brunswick's commercial corridor.

Dean Chiarella, the store's new manager, says that Burlington is "always hiring."  He invites residents to "Come out.  The place is a beautiful, clean, inviting environment."  His sentiments were echoed by Kim Marin, Burlington District Manager who has overseen both the renovation of the North Brunswick Burlington and this new store, "We are excited to be part of the community of East Brunswick."

The feeling seems to be mutual.  Councilman Sterley Stanley said, "We are happy to have a big-name store in East Brunswick.  This is in line with the vision for the township to return to being the 'pearl' of Middlesex County."  Mayor Cohen, who was joined by Council members Camille Clark and Mike Spadafino, noted, "We are thrilled you're here as part of the redevelopment of Route 18.  100,000 cars a day pass through this commercial corridor, and it is ripe for business."

Burlington started its life in East Brunswick by making a donation of 6 pallets of clothing and supplies to the Ozynam Family Shelter in Edison, a community outreach program of Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Metuchen.  The Ozynam Shelter provides homeless families and single women with temporary and emergency lodging, meals, physical and mental health assessments, crisis counseling, assistance with housing, employment and children's educational placement, case management and referrals.

Burlington is located at 50 Racetrack Road and is open from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm all week and 9:30 to 9:30 on Sundays.
