East Brunswick's Girl Scouts Work With Young Woman's Busy Schedule

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Have you wanted to join a Girl Scout troop, but just don't have the time? Check out this out. Busy teens can be Independent Girl Scouts -- all the programs and awards without the scheduled troop meetings. Teen girls can do badge work, attend events, travel, earn awards or do community service on their own time. (And independent doesn’t mean alone. There will be adult guidance and plenty of opportunities to get together with others.

Independent Girl Scouts is for motivated and self-confident girls. If you want to make a difference for yourself and others using Girl Scout programs and resources, contact us. For more information: http://tinyurl.com/IndependentGirlScout  or eastbrunswickgirlscouts@gmail.

I’m too old to be a Girl Scout.

Girl Scouts has programs from K-12 grade. The teens don’t do the same stuff and the little girls so don’t worry.

I used to be a Girl Scout but my troop folded.

Sorry about that. But, once a Girl Scout always a Girl Scout. If you want to get active again we’ll find a way to make it work for you.

I was never a Girl Scout. Can I really start now?

Absolutely. Girls join at all grades. Awards and programs are grade or Girl Scout level specific so you don’t need to “rank up” … just jump in when you are ready.

What do teen Girl Scouts do?

Girl Scouts is Girl-Led, so you choose. If community service is your thing you might want to earn the Service to Community Award. Want to really dig deep into problem solving? Go for one of the highest awards, the Silver Award and the Gold Award. Some girls pick and choose from pre-planned local and regional programs to build their own experience. Some annual or bi-annual programs for teens are the Girl Leadership Summit and other leadership development programs, a special interest group for teen writers, another for digital media (grades 10-12), trips and camping. See some programs run for you by Girl Scout staff at gscsnj.org, click Activities.

I’m not really into badges and stuff.

No worries. Badges are not required although there are some pre-reqs if you want to earn a Silver or Gold Award. And you might be surprised how much fun some of the badge work can be.

Do I have to sell cookies? OR Can I sell Girl Scout cookies?

Again, Girl Scouts is all about what you want to do. A lot of teen Girl Scouts like the cookie sale because the profits help pay for things they want to do. Having your own funds is a way to make your own decisions. (An insider secret is that the annual cookie sale isn’t really about the cookies. It is a chance for you to learn business, financial and leadership skills by running your own business.)

I am so busy I don’t have time for troop meetings.

Well, teen troops really do try to accommodate the girl’s schedule. But, if you really do have a crazy crazy schedule - Girl Scouts has an independent option. Girls choose when and how they do Girl Scouts. But you are not totally on your own. We get you an advisor and keep you in the loop on local programs and opportunities. Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo

Retro Review: Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (Citadel Press, 1970)

How does a reviewer do justice to a book called “the great American novel”? I first read Johnny Got His Gun during the Viet Nam war, when young people, nationwide, were protesting fighting in a war that was a senseless waste of life; a war in which the United States had no business participating.

The Truth About My Reading

The Truth About My Reading

I didn't get my Composition and Literature teacher at Montclair State College at all. A crusty old man with a dour disposition, Mr. Smith always seemed angry and rude. He appropriately intimidated freshmen, even me, an English major, who found this common core course beneath my dignity. Frankly, as a graduate of Highland Park High School, and a survivor of Mrs.
