Girls Basketball: Spotswood Edges Metuchen To Move Into The First Round Of GMC Tournament

METUCHEN, NJ - The Spotswood High School girls varsity basketball team defeated Metuchen High School, 42-37, in the preliminary round of the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament to move into the first round.

After heading into the halftime break down, 27-22, the Chargers defense held the Bulldogs to a combined 10 points for the final two quarters. Putting 20 on the scoreboard in the final 16 minutes along with shutting down the Bulldogs' offense propelled the Chargers.

Metuchen's Brynn Farrell scored a game-high 18 points for the Bulldogs. Farrell also earned a double-double by pulling down 14 rebounds. Mary Beth Barnosky was the top point-getter for the Chargers, netting 12 points in the win. Julie Raba scored nine while Maddie Hellerich added eight points. Erin Malin earned seven points for the Chargers and Savannah Robinson chipped in four.

The win moves the Chargers into the first round of the GMC Tournament where they will face off against top seeded Sayreville High School. The Bombers hold an impressive 20-2 overall record and are 14-0 in conference play. Spotswood has a 15-9 record for the 2016-17 season and are 10-4 in conference play. The Chargers will travel to Sayreville High School on Wednesday, February 15 for the first round game. A start time for the matchup was not available at press time.
